Kickin off "Firkin Thursday" for the 4th of July in style! As the cask conditioned offerings can be a bit hit-or-miss, the Extra Special Bitter is a fool-proof choice to beat the heat!
Pouring a darker bronze hue, hinting toward tawny brown color- the lightly hazedale pours with a creamy and short-statured head. Creamy in its off-white froth, the foam clings to the glass with quality lacing patterns.
Burnt caramel, light toffee, brown sugar and a light biscuit scent comes to life, just ahead of a sterner toasted character. Delicately floral, the nose opens with the classic English aromatics of the style. But to taste, the slightly scorched caramel flavors bleed into the richer and fuller toasted grain taste and starchy-biscuit underpinnings. Floral hops recede but a light ester profile emerges with the supple taste of marmalade and white grape. Its hoppy finish balances the sweetness to perfection- allowing a broad wooden bitterness to ensure crispness and refreshment.
Medium bodied- the ale wraps around the tongue with the creamy lightness that only cask conditioned beers can. Velvety, smooth, and supple- the carbonation slowly releases and takes with it any initial sweetness. What's left is resinous hop dryness and pleasant alcohol warmth.
Their ESB should be a regular offering, whether its on cask or not. Its a classy ale that represents the style and its origins very well!
