Rich but gentle malt takes the lead, ahead of noble hops with their delicate spice notes in this mahogany hued ale. Ancient in origin, the abbey dubbel was all but lost until revived during the Napoleonic era. Today it has become the quintessential Belgian style.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber with a thin white head that dissipates to patches leaving good lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark and light stone fruit, Belgian yeast, mild estery fruit. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, estery light and dark stone fruit, dark dried fruit, Selkirk's interesting fruit forward Belgian yeast; finishes with a light neutral hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A nice take on a dubbel, with the fresh and dried dark fruit notes almost leaning in the direction of an English barleywine, but with clear Belgian yeast and spicing. I like Selkirk's yeast to the point of having high expectations for each new beer, and I like this one a lot too. ABV well covered.

22oz bottle tasted

A — Pours a deep ruby hue into the glass, almost leathery, cream colored head leaves behind some spotty lace.

S — Smells heavily of yeast, very much yeast forward, chewy dark fruit notes and leather character as well.

T  — Tastes of raisins, plums, chewy and slightly tannic, large malt balance, yeast dominates again.

M — Medium-Full bodied, rich, long and lingering finish.

O — Pretty good overall, would love a greater depth of flavor.
