We enlisted the help of our friends at 100km for some locally grown red currants, and marrying them with our beloved Farmageddon just seemed a no brainer. This brett barrel aged Saison is all about the depths and nuances of brettanomyces over time. Aged for 18 months, the beer takes on a subtle tartness, lots of barnyard funk on the nose, and notes of cherry, smoke, and hay that vie for centre stage. Clean flavours, dry finish, with the bonus of a soft sour zing from the currants.

Had at Cask Days. Very good. I am a big fan of Farmageddon, which has greatly improved since the first batch and become an outstanding beer. The addition of the red currants works well, as they are fairly light and add an additional flavour rather than take over the beer. The Brett is strong and very flavourful. Great stuff.

Mason jar at Cask Days.

A - White foam settles to a thin ring. Hazy orange body, with perhaps a hint of red from the currants.

S - Loads of brett - too much actually. Currant and wine barrel acidity in the periphery, but mainly brett and bready pilsner malt. Don't get much of the base Saison's yeast character.

T - The taste is again pretty understated in the fruit department. Heavy brett and pils malt character, with a mildly buttery note in the finish that kind of distracts. Aftertaste is a tad oaky and medicinal.

M - Medium body, creamy, soft texture, low carbonation, no alcohol. Some tannins in the finish.

D - Not bad, but a tad underwhelming. Wish there was more fruit and acidity and less pronounced brett. Might develop in time; perhaps they'll bottle the rest.

Enjoyed at Cask Days 2014. A soft rose pink colour, light golden. Aroma has currents, with tart Brett funk and acidity and a light spice. Taste is quite full with complex red berry notes, yeasty spice. Light acidity, funk is light behind the tartness. Altogether a very flavourful saison, Brett gets a bit more pronounced at the end. Really nice, with the berry fruits and solid balance. Excellent stuff.
