Motley Cru is our anniversary barrel blend, released (fashionably late)
each year to commemorate another lap around the sun. It represents a
lot of planning, labour, patience and creativity – a final destination for some of our most prized barrels.

This year’s blend -- comprised of sours, brett beers, and wild ales
that we picked from both foudres and barrels -- is a particularly
significant one because it happens to be the first MC to be
brewed, barrel aged, blended, and bottle conditioned entirely
within our Hafis production facility. In this setting the barrels
slumber in peace, produce better beers, and house a sassy
cohort of bugs and yeast that are constantly working on becoming their best selves.

In the 2018 blend we prioritized punchy acidity and bright
fruitiness, nuanced brett characteristics, and complex wild yeast
derived flavours. We divided the beer unequally into 3 parts, before adding fruit to create variants.

Pomegranate Variant: A bright pop of orange in the glass. Aromatics
of pomegranate, oak, subtle spice, and plum. Flavours of citrus
zest, wood, and juicy fruit. Lively carbonation with a bright, spritzy body.

This one pours a light pinkish reddish color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like citrus, oak, spice, plum, acidity, and pomegranate (obviously).

This has such a nice and soft flavor to it, like a fruity pillow, with a light but firm acidity, light funk, and tons of fruity goodness - citrus, plum, and pomegranate, with a touch of oak and white wine.

This is light bodied and crisp, with a clean acidity on the finish.

I think the black raspberry was the best of the fruited variants from the '18 Motley lineup. This is probably the second best.

Bottle: Poured a dirty reddish/amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of tart notes with some oak and subtle pomegranate notes is interesting. Taste is a mix of pomegranate notes with some tart notes with light acidic notes. Body is full with light filtration and good carbonation. Enjoyable sour but I was expecting pomegranate notes to be even more pronounced.
