This past September in the pre-Witchstock chaos, we wrangled the guys from Cloudwater to brew a session stout with us. Our aim was simple, to make a smooth stout with a moderate ABV that was decidedly more toffee-like than roasty. The result is a fantastically balanced beer with foundations of caramelized malts and chocolate, that we split into two variants: OG, and with coffee.

What it smells like, what it tastes like: Flavours and aromas of strawberry, caramel and milk chocolate are tempered by light roasty notes and a subtle bitterness.

Pretty basic stuff without a lot of dimension. Has the requisite chocolatey malt thing going on, but not much past that. Thin bodied, no complexity in the aroma or flavour. Cola dark, under a short lived moderately sized head. No lace, no film, no ring -- nada. Drinkable, but ordinary.

Seems to have been made as a base to support coffee and the like, and to that end it works. Rather malty too cold and rather too bitter when warmed.

Bottle: Poured a light black color ale with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt notes with some light bitter chocolate notes. Taste is a mix of smooth black chocolate notes with some light dry bitter chocolate malt notes. Body is light with strong carbonation. Enjoyable but a bit thin overall.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a big fluffy head, and lots of lacing.

This one smells like milk chocolate, toffee, roasted malt, and dark fruit.

This has a very pleasant sweetness- slightly fruity, with some malty toffee character, too. There's the usual chocolate, light and silky, with some coffee. As the beer warms up, it seems to thin out a little bit.

The mouthfeel on this is pretty creamy, but a bit thin. It's very drinkable, though.

This is a nice and basic no-frills stout. I'd want it to be a little thicker, but I'm happy with it.
