We decided to kick off a little series of stouts to feature local coffee roasters, and selfishly, to observe the results of different beans in beer. We kept the ABV relatively low, the body chewy and voluptuous, and let the coffee do most of the talking.

First up is Cut Coffee Butterknife Espresso (its tasting notes are toffee, peanut butter, and berry jam)! This edition is velvety and rich, with a sweetness that’s rounded out by mild bitterness. Tons of espresso flavour up front, and behind, and everywhere.

What it smells like, what it tastes like: This small batch of stout was conditioned on 30 pounds of freshly roasted espresso beans, lending flavours of strawberry, peanut brittle and dark, chewy caramel.

Wow. Delicious. Pours coffee black with a substantial head that settles to a full film with some lace. Bonus points because i overpoured it and it looked spectacular over topping the lip of the glass and cascading down the sides. Sad to soill some beer, but totally worth it.

All about coffee. Great coffee nose, great coffee flavor. Bittersweet chocolate, no chalkiness. Almost more coffee than stout. Slightly bitter thin finish. Enjoyable overall.
