Our newest series celebrates the deliciousness of a bold, chewy stout that’s more than a little bit extra. Black Liquids are rich and chocolatey, with a toasty malt backbone and a generous dose of dessert-esque adjuncts. It’s essentially the beer version of saying “yes” to whipped cream on that hot chocolate.

Volume 4: The timeless combination of raspberries and cocoa plays off of the decadent body of the base beer. Featuring intense aromas and flavours of fresh raspberries and fudge, suggesting a rich raspberry torte.

Got this one from peensteen this past summer. Thanks, man!

From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Imperial stout with Raspberry and Cocoa

APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, semi-creamy, tan head with very good excellent retention. Black body with medium carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, thick foam cap and clings to the glass. A slight wisp remains leaving lots of sticky lacing on the glass as it empties. Good looking.

SMELL: Bid raspberry aroma off the bat. Almost like raspberry juice. A light hint of milk chocolate in there, but this is pretty much all raspberry juice all the time.

TASTE: Raspberry tartness with hints of milk chocolate and a lightly roasted and alcoholic quality at the swallow. Lots of raspberry all over the place here. Bold finish is tart and juicy raspberry, quite juicy, somewhat acidic, with hints of milk chocolate, lightly roasted flavors and some alcohol lingering on the palate. Super juicy.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy and enough weight on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes rather sticky on the palate. A bit of heat lingers.

OVERALL: Luckily I really like raspberries. Raspberry jam all day long. This is a raspberry beer first and, well, that’s more or less the end of the story. It looks like a stout and if I imagine roasted barley and cocoa, I can kind of find something in there, but that’s more a testament to my superb talents of imagination than to the balance of the beer. I actually quite enjoyed this, probably more than my score suggests, and if there were trying to make it a thick, black raspberry bomb, they more than succeeded. Thanks again, peensteen!

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a fluffy head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like raspberry jam, and a touch of chocolate - but the raspberry just absolutely and utterly dominates the aroma here. It's a good smell - but still overwhelming

The taste is similar. You barely get any of the added cocoa, and for that matter - none of the base stout. It's just pure raspberry jam - I'm not sure that blind I would be able to tell that this was a stout.

This is kind of thin, but pretty drinkable, with a typical level of carbonation.

They really nailed a delicious raspberry flavor, but there is absolutely no nuance to this. Bellwoods is capable of much better than this.

Pours thick and syrupy, and even when poured straight down in the glass, it only slowly builds a head that's the colour of milk chocolate with a minute's retention. Body is as close to black as it gets.
Burst of raspberry on the nose, like sticking your face in fresh jam, it dominates. No mistaking this one, and no room for anything else other than whisper of dark chocolate. Chocolate and raspberry cake? My favourite.
The flavour follows suit, right on the mark. Pure raspberry flavour, balanced by a more pronounced cocoa note than was in the aroma. There's really nothing else to it, this is an admirably focused brew. Maybe a touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium, slightly oily, and is under carbonated, which allows the palate to tire more quickly.

Huge fan of the flavour and aroma, but wishing the carbonation and mouthfeel were more on point to make this a top notch bottle, it really does take away from the enjoyment. But, as I said, great tasting, and a nice dessert option. Could pair well with some chevre or creamy cheese.

Bottle pour at Hafis.

Thin appearance. Strong raspberry aromas. Chocolate in the background.

Raspberry chocolate with a good dose of sweetness.

Thin for my tastes. Least favorite of the series. A raspberry stout lover would probably appreciate this more than me.
