As years passed and our oak aged beer became more robust, we discovered many unique, interesting, single barrels deserving of a special release. Barn Owl was created as a response to these lone wolves, and has grown into a diverse, ongoing series that reflects the growing diversity of our barrel program. The name is a nod to the wise and exacting animal that keeps watch over the farmhouse (er..industrial warehouse), and the one-off creations are released sporadically throughout the year, just as soon as we deem the barrels ripe for the picking.

Inspired by the 2017 vintage of Motley Cru -- Barn Owl No. 18 began as a blend of a brett inoculated pale ale from one of our new foeders and a sour golden ale from one of our more sour-forward OG foeders before conditioning on passionfruit purée. The result is highly drinkable with huge tropical fruit flavours and aromas, notes of preserved lemon, pineapple and a hint of earthy funk.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.8%. Slightly hazy pale golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of brettanomyces, farmhouse kitchen, oak, mild spices, passionfruit and other tropical fruits. Sour flavour, notes of lemons, lactic acid, apple cider vinegar, oak and passionfruit. A bit too sour for me.

This one pours a golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like juicy passionfruit, stinky funk, lots of acid, and lemon.

Something happened here, as there's an intense blanket of weird stinky funk on this, and it's quite acidic as well. There's some good passionfruit character here, but it's buried by the unpleasant funk and unpleasant acid.

This is tough to drink, as it's just so intense. It's a very slow sipper.

Passionfruit often seems to create some weird off flavors in wild ales. This wasn't my favorite.

Pours a hazy golden hue. What stands out most as far as first impressions is how sulfury it smells. It is baby diaper bad aroma wise. If you are able to power through that, you will get some milky tartness, not a ton of passionfruit character. Enjoyable enough beyond the odor.
