A few short weeks ago we released Double Barrel BOYD Rye and today we are releasing its sibling-of-sorts: Double Barrel BOYD Bourbon.

Both iterations first spent 12 months in cognac barrels, layering notes of raisin and anise onto an Imperial Stout base. A subsequent trip to secondary barrels resulted in two deliciously different beasts. Whereas the rye version was quite spirit-forward, this newest addition picked up lots of oak characteristics during its 9-month sojourn in bourbon barrels. Hints of clove and vanilla are underscored by a pleasant touch of bourbon heat, all within a thick and sticky body.

Note: a labour-intensive and s l o w process such as this one means that the end result will move fast.

Pours absolutely pure black with a rich, luxurious dark tan head that is lingers. Gorgeous beer. The nose features milk chocolate, caramel, some roasty char, a nice barrel note - and stone fruit. Is that the cognac barrel effect?

That milk chocolate flavor and the caramel are forward, but man, does that stone fruit flavor, as ripe dark cherries, assert itself mid palate, guiding you into the slightly boozy, oaky finish. This is world class stuff here, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, perfect for this decadent beer. The Bellwood’s impy stout game is top tier, IMHO.

Pours a thick, black color. Caramel colored head formation that dissipates quickly. Whisky on the nose. Chocolate taste, with Whisky finish. Quite boozy, but overall very tasty.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size dark brown foamy head with light retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of roasted ampt and black chocolate notes with some vanilla, bourbon and warming alcohol notes also perceptible. Taste is also a mix of roasted mat with blakc chocolate with some woody notes of bourbon, vanilla and warming alcohol notes with very little residual sugar notes noticeable. Body is full with medium carbonation with some warming alcohol notes noticeable. Solid double barrel aged stout.

Much sweeter than the rye variant.
