I decided to try one of my mystery beers. Choosing the lighter and low abv first. The first impression is this might be a German beer. Not knowing what glass to use, I went with the pint. A frothy and airy light tan one-fingered head was created. Slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The color is a hazy muddy brown with no clarity. Loads of grain proteins are evident in appearance. It is an intriguing beer with excellent head retention.
Nosing the glass a few times, I get this strange feeling that I have drank this style. The beer is malt-forward. I smell cooked wheat, caramel malts, and hints of roasted notes. Other aromas I detect are earthy and subtle floral notes. I am still leaning towards German, maybe a dunklewiesen or bock.
Prevalent wheat and roasted malt profile, it is not a bock. I taste resin, orange, vanilla, chocolate, and bread crust.
The mouthfeel is somewhat bitter with an odd finish. The body is full and has medium carbonation.
I am completely stumped. It is not German; it has hops and chocolate. It is a bit weird and funky to enjoy. I will unwrap the can; I would have never guessed. A milk chocolate Milkshake IPA. I generally stray away from these styles; not a fan. However, this one is better than I expected.
