Blitzen is a celebratory beer released in December, brewed to encapsulate flavours of the holiday. This year's Blitzen is a Fruitcake Imperial Stout inspired by everyone’s favourite brandy-soaked Christmas cake, complete with raisins, cranberries, dates, whole vanilla beans, orange peel and cinnamon. (The brewery smelled particularly good on the day the aforementioned adjuncts were prepped for conditioning.)
This embodiment of holiday flavours offers up notes of orange, cranberry and vanilla at the forefront and more caramelized fruit notes as it warms up a touch. Rich, smooth, fruity and supremely befitting of the season. The perfect winter night cap.

473 ml can served cold into a chalice. Purchase from the brewery. Eagerly anticipated.
Appearance - Very dark brown, virtually black engine oil coming from the glass. Leaves a finger of loose tan frothiness that sticks around for a while given the high ABV.
Smell - Initially subdued nose, some breadiness with raisins and cranberries doing most of the heavy lifting, but on the whole smells' like a Christmas fruitcake.
Taste - Orange, cinnamon and rum over a big bready base. Some raisins , dates and cranberries too. That orange cinnamon combo though just does it, a touch of bitterness with coriander, but truly a fruitcake explosion. Some heat and booziness as there are common threads with mulled wine as well - touches of star anise and red wine.
Mouthfeel - Full bodied, yet sufficiently light, boozy but not hot, this has mellowed a bit. Carbonation is moderate-low as would be expected and finish is surprisingly light.
Overall - Well, executed, flavorful and puts out exactly the right flavors you'd expect from a boozy fruitcake beer themed around the Christmas holidays. Well conceived and even better executed. This won't be for everyone, but very pleasing.
