500ml bottle served fairly cool into a goblet. Brewery purchase. Different than last year's rendition as this brew was aged in rye barrels as opposed to rum barrels.
Appearance - Black and oily, slick. A half finger of dark tan head is poured with a few frothy patches. Moderate retention and a small collar lingers.
Smell - Molasses in a big way with some dark chocolate and vanilla. A bit woody with some subtle rye suggestions.
Taste - Molasses, some vanilla flavors, then a bready cinnamon toast like quality and a touch of marshmallows. A bit of spice towards the end. Surprisingly grainy throughout which knocks the normal overbearing sweetness of some of the pastry stouts down a notch.
Mouthfeel - Full bodied, with low carbonation. Slick and chewy texture, some heat in the back of the throat from the ABV and also perhaps a touch from the spiciness of the rye barrels.
Overall - Very flavorful and tasty imperial stout, the rye adds a pleasant spiciness to an otherwise very sweet imperial stout with the molasses, vanilla, marshmallow and chocolate combo.
