A light, refreshing, deliberately soured Berliner Weisse brewed with smoked malt. A classic but odd beer, characterized by its lemony, sourdough, and mild smoky flavours. This version was brewed with stewed rhubarb. A Bellwoods staple throughout the summer months.

Poured on-tap and served in a tulip, the beer is a hazy, pale, yellow-white coloring with a frothy, clingy, white head. Thick lacing all over the glass as you drink. Nose of tart and sour, with hints of rhubarb and smoke. Smells rich. Flavors are smooth and smoky initially, with a slow reveal to the rhubarb characteristics. Tartness follows, slightly puckering the palate and transitioning to a tangy sweet aftertaste. Dry, sweet finish, with hints of smoke still lingering. This brew doesn't cloy at all, and I could drink it all day. Great brew.

On tap at the brewery, into a tulip.
Hazy, muddy yellow. No head or no lace as served. Nose has light smoke, cooked corn, grains and a touch of lacto. Taste has some smoked grains, yogurt, lightly tart/lemony doughy character. Medium feel, light tartness and residual woody smoked on the palate. An interesting smoked Berliner, but doesn't hold a candle to the only other example I've ever had in this style (Hopfenstarks Boson de Higgs).

Beer is a cloudy yellow/gold colour. Moderatelt sized white head that fades relatively quickly. No lacing.
Smell contains some smoke, dry cereal and lemon.
The taste is quite tart, much more so than Bellwoods' initial Berliner. Lots and lots of lemon. Smoke is present but not as strongly as the nose. Dry cereal, wheat. A bit of clove. Lemon is the dominant flavour in a big way.
Medium bodied, highly carbonated. Puckering.
Overall, not bad. A bit like a bizarre lemonade.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. A small amount of brown colour. Only faint smoked aroma, its from the small use of smoked malt. A tad funky. Lower than average mouthfeel, and the lactic sourness doesn't sit right.Its the style, but the first time I did not want to drink this style. Despite the effort, here's one that didn't work out as planned.
