Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

SUMMIT: This incredible aromatic hop variety from Washington state is perhaps the most unique in our series. With a strong pungency bordering on savoury, Summit showcases just how diverse the range of hop scents and flavours can span.

Bottle: Poured a hazy golden color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dank notes with some citrus and light piney notes is enticing. Taste is dominated by hops flavours of citrus, dank notes and some light piney notes with a dry finish with not much bitterness but not much residual sugar noticeable either. Body is full with good carbonation. I love this series and glad to be able to try this hops by itself.

Bottle from the brewery. Served in a Cantillon tulip.

A - A few fingers of white foam settle to a thick cap and plenty of lacing. Lightly hazed golden straw body.

S - Spicy and slightly oniony hop aroma, light crackery malt. A tad leafy and dank, touch of grapefruit rind, with a touch of sugary sweetness.

T - Bitterness is fairly high, which is to be expected from this hop. There's a fair amount of sugar cookie and cracker supporting the bitterness, but less in the way of hop flavor. A bit of green leafiness and zesty citrus.

M - Medium body, super dry, with pleasant moderate carbonation. Lots of lingering hop oils and resins on the palate. No alcohol.

D - It's a Summit pale ale. Pretty good, but perhaps not the most compelling hop to showcase, particularly with all the new strains. Still, glad it isn't heavy on the garlic/onion flavors. Easily consumed a 500ml bottle.

Purchased at Bellwoods for around the $7.00 mark or so for a 500ml bottle. A bit steep. Served at 6deg C in a tulip

A- Opens with a mighty pop and pours a good white head that films out in around 2mins or so. Nice moderately filtered light gold colored.

S- Lots of hops dry and wet. You can tell.

T- You can taste exactly what they want you to taste. Hops. Plain and simple. Very good blend.

M- Kind of dry but not a great mouth. Not a great APA but that's ok since taste is up there!

O- Me like. Overall I like it. Good hops. Nice malt. Very focused beer so it's a tough food pairing

Food Pairing

This very good APA went well with...... Tacos!! The nice greens and salsa hit this beer on the head!

Enjoy

500 ml from brewery. Drank 3 days later so it was very fresh.

A light golden straw colour. Slightly murky. Inch and a half fine white head. Large carbonation bubbles. Excellent thick lacing with very good retention.

A strong aroma of citrus - grapefruit and pine needles with a faint touch of glazed donuts. This was probably dry hopped to get this wonderful citrus aroma.

The taste is not quite as strong as the aroma. Grapefruit and orange taste with a very little bit of pine. The malt taste comes through as lemon bread. The bitterness is mild and not at all extreme.

A rich creamy mouthfeel.

This is great warm weather pale ale. I appreciated the opportunity to experience a single hop ale.

Thanks to a buddy for picking up a bottle of this at the brewery. 650ml bottle pours a clear copper with good head. Tastes of citrus, with a nice hope bite and fruits coming through like grapefruit and peach. Very refreshing and it gave me hop burps! Fantastic pale ale. One of the best Ontario beers I have had to date. This brewery kicks ass.

650ml bottle from Bellwoods bottle shop. Bottling date: Feb. 12, 2013

(3.75) A: Clear copper coloured with a puffy and bubbly white foam head. Long lasting retention and good lacing down the glass.

(4.25) S: Grapefruit and orange rind, dry pine, lemon zest, pineapple juice, buttered biscuits, and spices. This is incredibly fresh smelling with lots of vibrant fruit aromas set against a solid bread-like malt backbone.

(3.75) T: Tart citrus fruits including a semi-sour lemon taste, a bit of pine, sea salt, and a fainter cracker malt. This has a mineral-like taste. Those aromas are harder to detect in the taste, but are present for the most part.

(3.5) M: Lighter bodied with medium-lower carbonation. Thinner with a lingering dryness.

(3.75) D: A very good aroma led into a good taste profile that displayed an okay mouthfeel. A decent IPA that's refreshing and certainly easy to drink.

Hazy pale blonde-ornage colour, one finger white head, some lace on the glass here as well. Smell is fairly citrusy, hoppy, lots of orange and tangerine, a bit of a sweet malty core, mostly dry tropical fruit. Taste is dry and hoppy, lots of citrus, orange, quite bitter throughout, a bit of malt in as well, a little fruity and a bit of onion in the aftertaste also, not unpleasant but a little distracting. Medium carbonation, medium body. A good hoppy pale ale, not as good as the nelson single hop they put out but still another solid beer from these guys.

Bottle into GLB 25th anniversary glass. Bottled 2 days ago

A - straw/pale yellow, one finger head, gone in an instant, leaving a ring.

S - somewhat faint, I had higher expectations from such a fresh beer. Slightly peachy, and citrusy

T - Great, crisp, refreshing beer. Cuts across the tongue, leaving no trace of itself moments later. Nice malty finish, perfect balance

M - a little bit over carbonated, but it's so refreshing and light, and easy drinking that I don't even care at all. coats the palate, then is gone just like that. Really easy drinking for 6.4 ABV.

O - Love Bellwoods, they rarely disappoint, go get this beer! The monogamy series is great.
