Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.
CALYPSO: This American hop variety imparts distinct fruity qualities of pear and grape.

Bottle: Poured a light hazy golden hay color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of fruity hops with light bitterness notes is quite pleasing. Taste is a good mix of fruity hops with nice clean ester and some light bitter aftertaste. Malt is quiet present but also well balanced as to not overshadow the hops profile. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Well brewed though not the most expressive hops variety.

Beer is clear golden with a good-sized white head. Decent retention and lace.
Smell is nice but a bit muted. Grass and light fruits. I can't pick out individual fruit scents.
Taste is fairly bitter, particularly in the finish. Melon and grape flavours, and some grassy tastes. Some sweetness from the malt, a bit if biscuit. I found the taste grows on you- average at first, quite taste by the end.
Medium bodied, moderate to low carbonation. Slightly oily. Nice feel, very smooth.
Overall, quite good.

Thanks to Chris for this bottle. Bottled on October 12, 2012. Poured in to Bellwoods tulip.
A - Pale yellow; translucent. Half a finger of white head.
S - Big lemon zest aroma up front with notes of fresh cut grass and a big herbal presence. A noticeable caramel malt sweetness is present in the background.
T - Big fresh cit grass and herbal flavours accompany a moderate hop bitterness up front. Some lighter melon notes are present as well. An interesting flavour profile and my first experience with the calypso hop (in a single hop beer). A touch of caramel malt sweetness in the background.
M - Medium body with a good chew. Moderate carbonation.
O - A well made beer but I am not particularly fond of the calypso hop in a single hop beer.

Very pleasant fresh pale ale. Deep yellow with some good looking head. So-so aroma, I would like to get more hop in the smell. The hop can be even better featured. Above average mouthfeel. A nice beer and hits the style, and can be tweaked to be a great pale.

650 ml bottled Oct 12. 1 day old.
Pours a clear light golden with a half inch of frothy white head, plenty of lacing. Nose is citrus, light fruits of apple, floral. Taste is bitter hops up front, lemon zest, pear, stone fruit, piney. Towards the finish its rounded out with a caramel malt backing that brings it all together. Mouthfeel is medium heavy, dryness in the finish.
Overall another welcome addition to Bellwoods Pale Ale Single Hop Series showcasing the Calypso variety. These guys do the hoppy pales very well. Recommended.
