This dark wheat beer is new territory for us. With lots of roasted malty flavour, Sails Of Charon is not only named after our favourite song by Scorpions, but also the Greek mythological figure who was the ferryman of Hades, carrying the souls of the nearly deceased across the rivers Styx that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. The perfect beer to welcome these colder temperatures, Sails Of Charon is a great Fall go to.

Served in a weizen glass.

A - Voluminous light mocha foam settles to a linger creamy cap, leaving behind plenty of lacing. Unfiltered chestnut brown body, with some bubbles visibly streaming upward.

S - The initial aroma had a fair bit of green apple, but as the beer warmed it dissipated and revealed toasted grains, wheat, nuts, sugar cookie, and perhaps a hint of milk chocolate. Not the most potent beer and I don't get a ton of yeast character here.

T - The taste is a bit more potent, with clove and phenol-laden weizen yeast mingling with brown sugar, grain, tobacco, and a bit of milk chocolate. Less toasty and more yeasty here, with a mildly tangy finish.

M - Medium body, grainy texture, with a fairly crisp finish; only mild lingering stickiness. Pleasant carbonation and minimal alcohol presence.

D - Not a bad beer once you get past the wimpy aroma. I think a 12oz serving might have been better than 500ml, as I struggled near the end; not the type of beer I'd want in large quantities. Still, it's a pretty solid example of a relatively unsexy style.

Beer is dark brown, with a moderately sized off-white head. Fades steadily.

Nose contains wheat and is very malty and bready. Smells quite sweet. Banana and raisin are there. Smells a bit like banana bread, but more on the bread side than banana.

Fairly strong flavour. Wheat, spices, bubblegum, bread, banana and raisin. Decently hopped- despite the notable sweetness, the finish has a touch of bitterness.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. A bit of boozy heat, but slight.

Overall, pretty good, but too sweet and it gets hard to finish a pint. Starts strong, but wears on you.
