Our single hop series has been a delicious and interesting experiment into the diverse world of hops. Following an identical recipe but only changing one variable each time (the hop) we've been able to study the exact aromatics and flavours imparted by specific varieties. Not unlike the series launched by Mikkeller, here at Bellwoods our Monagamy brews are all about settling down with one love. Yes, when ordering this beer in the brewpub the jokes are endless (ie. “I'm not so sure about monogamy” or “I tried monogamy once and never really liked it” or the oft hilarious “I guess I'll have it because my girlfriend/boyfriend is sitting beside me”) but stop being a wise-ass. Even the polygamous can't deny the allure of this beer.

KOHATU: An aromatic hop variety from New Zealand, notably used in our Omertá this past spring. Among the more subtle versions of our Monogamy pale ale, this Kohatu version has beautiful citrusy and floral notes.

Part of my amazing Fall 2013 Canbif box from TheSevenDuffs. Thanks again Marcus.

A: Pale wheat in the pour with 2 fingers of off white head which slowly settles leaving lacing clinging to the sides of the glass.

S: Initial wheat scent together with crisp and tart fruit of apples and pears. Background notes of lemon rind and grass. Very clean.

T: Upfront tartness of lemon rind and crisp apples and pear followed by wheat and fresh cut grass. Finishes with a slight bitterness on the tongue. Clean and refreshing.

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Clean and dry.

O: Very clean and refreshing, with to pleasant tartness that is inviting. Another solid offering from Bellwoods which I'm glad I've had the opportunity to try.

Enjoyed on Oct 6/13. Bottle was less than 2 weeks old at the time. Very fresh.
Poured in to tulip.

A - Cloudy opaque yellow/orange with one finger of bright white head that slowly reduced to a thin layer.

S - A big dank/musky aroma catches the nose at first that is complimented by lighter peach, tangerine and pineapple aromas.

T - Good bitterness up front. Dank/musky flavour dominates with some peach, pineapple and line flavours. A touch of caramel malt sweetness in the background.

M - Medium body. Somewhat creamy. Sticky. Light carbonation.

Pours light straw with a lot of haze. A huge pillowy head lasts a good while and leaves tons of lace trails behind. Herbal, minty hops mix with cracker-like maltiness in the nose. Zesty, floral hops take the lead in the taste. Sea air and some light evergreen in the back. A solid, pilsner-like, clean maltiness balances throughout. The mouthfeel is light bodied with a light to moderate, creamy carbonation. The Finish is subtley bitter with a nice herbal character.

This is a nice varietal pale ale. Tastes more like a continental aroma hop than the tropical fruit bomb I was expecting from a new NZ hop. Very nice, and understated. Not a hop bomb by any means.

Likely bottled yesterday or so, but not date.

Beer is a cloudy caramel-orange. Large white head, fades at a moderate pace, leaving some lace. Looks nice.

Smell is very good. Quite floral and very fruity. Nice tropical fruit scents jump right out, really soft and nice. A bit perfume like.

Taste is good, but not as nice as the nose. Again, light tropical fruit flavours, peach seems to jump out for me, but there is more. Some pine and weedy flavours, but not as strong as the fruit. Fairly bitter.

Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, a bit oily.

Overall, very enjoyable. I don't have real familiarity with this hop and I quite enjoy it.
