22oz bottle. Pondering Freudian concepts while drinking is a certain fool's errand.

This beer pours a hazy, murky dark tarnished bronze amber colour, with two fingers of rocky, puffy, and billowy ecru head, which leaves some broad A-bomb testing ground lace around the glass as it gently seeps away.

It smells of biscuity caramel malt, bready toffee, saucy brown sugar, apple/pear concentrate, muddled citrus pith, musty earthy, leafy, and grassy hops, and a hovering booze astringency. The taste is hot caramel/toffee malt, fruit salad - heavy on the overripe orange, red grapefruit, and apples - a weird chalkiness, leafy, piney hops, and a heady alcohol warming. Simple, yeah.

The bubbles are pretty understated, and not really notable beyond their basic duties, the body a stout medium-full weight, for this or any other style, and halting in its smoothness, i.e. there's much vying here to halt its forward progress. It finishes off-dry, but generally balanced, the big malt, big booze, and strangely underwhelming hops dancing that delightful dance.

Yup, I've been glancing at the sidebar here for a good 20 minutes, and I have to say - when 8 of the top 10 examples of this made-up, catch-all style are from either Stone or Lagunitas, you gotta think that others would mimic their success. Ladies and germs, exhibit A (probably not - possibly E or F): I knew straight off that this reminded me of Arrogant Bastard, in its brash, boozy, and edgy caramel sweetness, though one lacking the big west coast bittering hop counter punch. Still, a decent version, and all that.

Wonderful aroma, very sweet. Hazy amber beer with a creamy colored head. Palate is smooth, turning crisp. Nice malt, fairly rich and creamy with a little toffee. Pleasant hops -mostly mellow with little noble hop like spice. Unbelievably drinkable and really does smell amazing.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Foothills Pint Glass at a backyard party.

Definitely a good looking beer. Deep amber color. Not a lot of head. Smell is really malty and carmelly, similar to a barelywine. Taste is just as the smell, with a solid carmel flavor and great malt body. After it hits the back, the bitterness remains for a while. Really nice.

I didn't think to look on the born-on date (if there was one), but this didn't seem as hot as some others have said theirs was. May have mellowed for a while, making it that much better.

Really enjoyed it and went well with the food. I prefer the barrel-aged version, but this was a really nice beer for a North Carolina summer evening get-together. Glad I put this puppy on the plane and brought it home.

Really good. Super malty! Would love to try the barrel aged version.

This has that rusty Old Ale taste, but with a zingy hoppiness that is rather appealing.

Color is a rich burnt orange with plenty of foam. This is all quite nicely made, and even the sweet Vermouth flavor seems right. I keep trying to find the right description of this stuff, but it's unusual to the point of almost unique. The malty sweetness is not overdone, but the bitterness is maybe a little much. It's hot with alcohol, and tastes like some kind of mixed drink with a big dose of bitters. A little splash of a Margarita, some taco sauce, a Smith Brothers cough drop, and a nice dollop of Pliny.

Still it's a very strong and wacky brew. Don't hate it cuz it's beautiful, and even the labels are more attractive than a lot of bigger SD brewers. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Baron's Marketplace on West Point Loma.

A - Nice dark amber, long lasting head, great lace.

S - Cold, but sweet malt comes through. Don't get much, though.

T - Malty, big, sweet, great back up on hops.

M - Med to heavy, good carbonation and balance. Nice finish.

D - Good stuff and was tempted to have another!
