“Amber ale.” Served on-draught at Haven into a 4.5oz sampler glass as part of a 4-sampler flight. Expectations are average. Cost was $2.00 USD. Reviewed from notes. 5.8% ABV confirmed.

A: Pours no head whatsoever; this might just be the sampler glass. We’re left with a disappointing floater; white and thin.

No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Body colour is a copper-amber. Clear. Somewhat vibrant. Standard fare for the style. Not unique or special.

Sm: Dominant amber malts. Light floral hops. Clean. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. Grainy. Floral character is nice; I get lilac. Vague hints of indistinct fruit. An aroma of average strength.

T: Clean amber malts with a hint of pleasant toastiness. Grainy. Minimal floral hop presence. Caramelization and caramalts. Maybe some American biscuit malt. No yeast character or alcohol comes through in the taste. Balanced but painfully simple for the style. Lacks subtlety. Mundane execution. I do like it, though. It’s enjoyable to drink.

Mf: Clean, smooth, and wet. Lightly crisp. Light presence on the palate. Okay thickness. Not oily or rough.

Dr: Drinkable. Quite enjoyable, but a very standard average amber. Not unique or special. I wouldn’t get it again. Not all that refreshing. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, I guess you could do worse than getting a growler of this. On the high end of average.

On tap at Haven Gastropub in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a clear copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, caramel, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with malt and grain flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is easy to drink but nothing too special in my opinion.
