On tap at Toronado South. Dark brown, nearly black in the pint shaker. The first couple of gulps go down so smoothly. Oops, I drank all the foam. This does have a pleasant tingly carbonation.

Big dark roasted flavor is the main event. Plenty of malt warms up the mouthfeel and an engaging hoppiness sharpens up the aftertaste. A fruity flalvor like passion fruit, a little cocoa, and something like burnt coconut add to the complexity.

Tremendously drinkable dark beer and tastier than most of the stouts and porters I've had lately. Maybe this style will lead to some inspiration. The name makes me think of the song I heard today: "Bad girls-- talking 'bout bad, bad girls."

On tap at Haven Gastropub in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and slight citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with smoke and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with an odd smoke presence that I haven't encountered in the style before.

Served on-draught at Haven Brewpub in Pasadena into a 4.5oz sampler glass as part of a flight of four. Cost was $2.00. Reviewed from notes. 6.10% ABV. Billed as a Black Ale on Haven’s beer screen.

A: Pours a half finger head of nice creaminess and good thickness. Two minute retention. Nice lacing.

Body colour is a very dark amber-caramel brown. Nontransparent; opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Typical appearance for the style. Not unique or special.

Sm: Hazelnut, coffee. Floral and herbal hops. Dark malts. Bock malts. Aroma is of mild strength. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable.

T: Caramel, light coffee (though accompanying roast is sorely missed here), dark malts, and floral hop character. A pretty restrained black IPA – and a pretty balanced one as a result. Simple but tasty. Lacks subtlety. I do like it. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Lacks roasted barley, to its detriment.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Nice thickness. Suits the flavor profile well. Pretty good carbonation.

Dr: Drinkable, but I wouldn’t get it again. It’s a nice black IPA but it doesn’t stand out as unique or special. Unrefreshing. The bock-esque malty notes hold it back. Rough around the edges, but enjoyable overall. Certainly above average for the style.
