On tap at Haven Gastropub in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a hazy gold with a foamy off-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, and artificial banana bubblegum aromas. Taste is much the same with fake banana and bubblegum flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with a fairly decent smell but the flavors are not well done.

Served on-draught at Haven Brewpub in Pasadena into a 4.5oz sampler glass as part of a flight of four. Cost was $2.00. Reviewed from notes. 4.8%. Listed as a hefeweizen on Haven’s beer screen.

A: Pours a quarter finger head of white colour and bad (~30 second) retention.

Body colour is a hazy lemon yellow. Nontransparent. Translucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Okay vibrance. Standard fare for the style; it’s not unique or special but there are no overt flaws.

Sm: Fresh wheat. Clove. Banana. Pils malts. Banana is dominant. Minimal floral hop presence; it’s hopped to style. Appealing for a hefeweizen. Above average in terms of strength.

T: Clean wheat. Some clove and banana. Pils malts. Pretty good, but too banana-centric. Nicely balanced and built, if simple. Lacks the intricacy and subtlety of masterful hefeweizens, but it’s refreshing and I do like it.

Mf: Clean, smooth, and wet. Good presence on the palate. Refreshing. Suits the flavor profile well. Good body and carbonation.

Dr: A pretty solid hefeweizen, but it’s far from unique or special. I’d have it again, but it isn’t exemplary. Hides its ABV well. A nice summer beer. An above average American attempt at a hefeweizen from Haven.
