Societe seems to be less acknowledged these days, possibly due to their insistence on never bottling, and the fact that they're staying away from the haze craze. Stopped by a couple of days ago after two years away to see what was what. Turns out they're still killing it, classic West Coast-style. Here's what I thought of The Miser:
Appearance: pristinely clear, golden body with the thin but substantial head you find on a beer of this ABV. With all the hazy and unfiltered beers you see these days, it's refreshing to see such a clear beer. Lacing is delicate and noticeable. The smell is inviting/exciting, not unlike Beachwood Hops of Fury . . . extremely dank but lots of roiling mango undertones. Absolutely no trace of alcohol on those nose. Taste is of marijuana, peach, mango, pine, all of which are incredibly balanced. As the beer warms, there's a very slight alcohol presence, but not assertive in any way, just a "hey, don't forget I could kick your ass." Like this year's version of PtY, you'd have to be careful about how many of these you put down. Mouthfeel is the only thing that somehow doesn't live up (though only slightly) to the rest of the experience; a little thin, especially compared to some of the beers I've mentioned above, and evaporates a little quickly for my preferences.
I'd forgotten how much I loved Societe in general; I wish they distributed just a little more widely and/or at least considered bottling The Pupil. I absolutely respect their decision, but think they could follow RR's lead on this (insisting on cold storage, etc.). At any rate, The Miser stands right alongside the best of the 10%+ D(T)IPAs and is well worth seeking out.

On tap at O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa, CA
Full pint – 02/26/2015
A: Golden blonde body with a hint of caramel color mixed in. Has some considerable chill haze but not quite cloudy or murky in appearance. There rests about a half finger of bone white suds over top as it slowly subsides back down into the body leaving a few clumpy streaks of lace left sticking to the glass.
S: The Miser brings such a fresh and fantastically hopped nose. All super danky and herbal with tropical mango fruit and citrus zest undertones. Alcohol seems really well tamed here and I get some subtle sugary pale malts wafting through as well. Quite nice.
T: Loads of dank tropical fruit notes with mango and spicy guava coming to mind. I get some peach and tangelo as well with light green onion coming through in the finish. Nice creamy malt cracker to balance with a mild caramel sweetness to it. The bitterness is fairly restrained as it hits midway and there is some trivial alcohol presence noted. Incredibly well integrated for such a big brew that it’s almost scary how smooth this is. I can’t believe how well they have balanced this sucker. Not too many 10%+ brews out there that I would consider crushable as is the Miser.
M: There is a moderate heft to the body with a nice sprtizy feel from the carbonation. I get a mid-level amount of actual constricting bitterness that leads into a nice dry, crisp finish. Somewhat resinous but more so on the cleaner side.
D: Damn good and dangerously drinkable at 10%ABV. The balance here is impeccable and the hop flavors I find very bright and refreshing. Bravo to the Societe! In terms of drinkability this is one I would rank over Younger and Expo any day.

Strong and sweet. This has the most powerful mango and pineapple taste ever. Burnt toast and bitter orange. It's so candy-like, but the bitter citrus peel is something of a balance.
Golden orange color. Tangy and acidic with grilled not-quite-ripe fresh pineapple. Vast fruity aroma. Unfortunately I keep sipping, sipping. Interesting and totally drinkable triple IPA.
A whale of a big brew that is lush with aromatics though not all that hot with alcohol. On tap at Toronado San Diego.
