a beautiful american stout here, worthy of its recent medal, and yet another beauty from societe, who doesnt ever seem to make a beer that is something other than awesome. this here is pretty classic, extremely full flavored, and surprisingly easy down. chocolate syrup brown in color with a nice shine and a short tan head with nice retention and ring lace. it smells and tastes like loads of layers of dark grain, from dry dusty cocoa notes of chocolate malt to rich almost licorice or tobacco qualities of the dark roasted barley, there is plenty happening here. soft and nutty at times, bold and even bitter hoppy later on, it really evolves from the time it first hits my lips through to after the swallow. the yeast isnt flavorless either, imparting an almost english old world authenticity to this. very solid beer overall, just enough body for all the flavor, not bogged down in any way. there is a robust balance achieved here too that few others in the style ever really reach. awesome stout, somewhat of an instant classic in my book.
