BOTTLE: 750ml. No label aside from a card hanging on twine. Unbranded hood-and-wire cap over a cork served cold into a Guinness goblet at high altitude in Castle Rock, CO.
5.5% ABV. Reviewed live as a farmhouse ale. Expectations are average. $12.00 USD. Allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: 1 finger wide head. White colour. Nice thickness. Decent creaminess. Retention is nice - about 3-4 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Cloudy milky lemon-yellow. Lemonade-esque, with a nice vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Appears well-carbonated. Far from unique or special, but a nice looking saison.
AROMA: Soft biscuity yeast, pleasant lemongrass, mild floral hop character, Belgian pale malts, wheat, lemon zest, and some subtle brettanomyces induced funkiness. Belgian yeasty spice. Lacks an adequate spice profile.
A pleasant aroma of average strength.
No alcohol or off-notes are detectable.
TASTE: Lemongrass. Belgian pale malts. Lemon zest. Tame floral hop character. Hints of flaked wheat. Lightly tart. Has an even brettanomyces funkiness throughout. Very tasty stuff. There're no off-notes or overt alcohol.
It's balanced albeit a bit simple for the style; a saison demands more complexity/intricacy. But it's nicely subtle, and has some good flavours. Good depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour.
TEXTURE: Delicate. Lightly smacky. Refreshing. Wonderfully soft. Smooth, lightly dry, light-bodied, aptly thin, and quenching. A great overall presence on the palate. Helps elevate the beer.
Not oily, gushed, got, boozy, astringent, scratchy, or rough.
OVERALL: Extremely drinkable for a saison. It's a very nice American stab at the style, and I'll enjoy finishing my glass. Great work from Bluejacket and well worth trying. Hides its ABV well.
