Bomber from Albertsons. Dark brown, murky pour, soft, silky beige head, lots of lacing. Mild, hoppy aroma, some if the roast grains present. Taste comes in much fuller, robust, biting. Not the usual the sourness, just straight up roast grains and hops. Solid CDA.

On tap in Meridian ID.

A: Clear dark black showing caramel brown on the edges of the glass.

S: Spicy rye, citrus, pine, charred dark malt.

T&MF: Bitter dry chocolate, piney citrus rind, spiced rye malt, coffee grounds. Dry, semi-bitter body.

O: Not a great black IPA, certainly still drinkable.

not sure why this one has such low scores, i was pretty impressed with it. its a robust and filling pint, but a darn flavorful one, probably best in colder weather, but its a hard style for me to pass up when i see it, seems like so few of these out there anymore. this is real roasty and dark, lots of deep dark barley in it, a burnt note, an earthy complexion, and a lot of character from the rye, it easily comes through the bitter black grain, spicy and dry. there are notes of dark chocolate and leather to this as well, a touch of caramel sweetness in the center, and a pretty hefty body as well, it would be good as a black rye ale even without all the hops, but the hops make it quite unique and intense. there are big pine notes through the whole thing and an oily resinous texture from the hops to match. i also get bitter orange and grapefruit peel, sticky weed, and a light fruity candy element as well, quite complex, and then very bitter to finish. this is everything i want in the style, a big peppery rye complexion, tons of hops from start to finish, and a layered and dynamic dark malt base in a smooth round package. i thought this one was awesome!

This is a Black Rye IPA, not American Black Ale. Nice aroma and hop flavor, tastes like Cascade. Roasty malt and an apple note that is interesting. Overall a good example of the style and something different from all the hazy beers out there.

Pours dark chocolate brown, almost black, with a pillowy tan head. Aroma of pine trees and wood followed by a buttery caramel note. Strong piney/resin flavor up front with dark chocolate flavor from the middle to the back. Finishes with an assertive bitterness, from both hops and grain, that lingers. A medium-full body that hangs on to the palate for a couple seconds; carbonation is medium-high. Overall finish is resiny, dark chocolate bitterness that lingers well beyond the next sip. Maybe even the one after that.
