a belgian wit with lemondrop hops, a varietal i see somewhat commonly in belgian styles, for how uncommon it seems to be overall, not sure why so many brewers have gravitated toward that, but its always been a varietal that has a little bit of a citrus cleaner or soapy property to my tastes, and so to put it with a yeast that can produce these sort of esters, especially a generic belgian strain or blend like is used here, seems like a potential double jeopardy with a polarizing flavor profile, just my two cents. fortunately this isnt phenolic or anything on the fermentation, and the hops are not overdosed, so its safe from that, but it still echoes something less than fully clean to me. green apple and white wine on the yeast, light peppery spice too, simple dry wheat and pils type base that doesnt contribute a whole lot, and then notes of bitter citrus from the hops, maybe a bit of coriander there too on the finish. its more fragrant than flavorful overall, and maybe is a little too yeast driven to be as refreshing as it seems to want to promote itself as being, but i cant complain, its light and different with the lemondrop, just sort of odd proportionality. i have been digging the new, more innovative beers from these guys overall lately.
