Taster at Public House. Medium amber pour, spotty head, lacing. Boozy aroma, butter rum. Taste is sweet malts, vanilla, caramel and plenty of warmth. Winter Ale indeed!

Out Cold Winter Ale
Date: 2020
Old Ale
I purchased this beer last year when I was working in Hailey. The wax on the beer cracked, and some chipped off. I used a tulip glass; the temperature was 46 degrees. The pour created a frothy and creamy three-fingered head. The dissipation was stead leaving some lacing on the glass. The color charts around SRM 16, dark brown with mahogany highlights. The clarity is clear with a few carbonation bubbles dancing lazily within. The appearance is above-average for this style.
A unique blend of whiskey and wine aromas is what I detect first. Nosing further, I smell oak, bread crust, alcohol, caramel, treacle, leather, a touch of phenols, and earthiness. The whiskey and wine dominated the aromas, hard to pick out any other characters.
The first beer I recall that I actually taste the pinot noir. It has a strong wine flavor, but the whiskey flavors but more muted; furthermore, I noticed orange, oak, and a touch of char. Bread, toffee, caramel, and tobacco are the last flavors.
The mouthfeel is warming and touch bitter. The body of the beer is medium, the carbonation is medium, and the finish is quick.
It is sad to see this beer; I drank one fresh and thought I would see a difference a year later in a cellar. There was no difference; I got unbalanced and jagged beer. I wanted harmony between the wine and whiskey and the rest of the main ingredients in the beer. Thus far what I have consumed from Sawtooth has been underwhelming.
