I am drinking 8th Anniversary today using a Tulip glass. This beer is 4 years old. Served it at 48 degrees. The pour created a cream, mousse, two-fingered, light tan head with average retention. The color is dark brown, with nearly black, charting around SRM 38. The beer is opaque. The dissipation left lacing on the glass. The appearance is average for this style.
The aromas of chocolate and coconut permeate the air. Nosing the glass, I smell almonds, coffee, molasses, toffee, caramel, and bready. As the beer warms up, the almond aroma dominates the nose, making it hard to smell anything else.
The chocolate is bitter and dark with flaked coconuts from the store. The Almond flavor in the beer is intense. The other flavors in the beer are chocolate, lightly roasted coffee, char, bready, toasted malts, and delicate floral.
The mouthfeel is bitter and finishes somewhat dry. The body is medium-plus, and the carbonation is medium-light.
The beer smells like an Almond Joy candy bar but with many almonds in it. The almond flavor is too strong and distracting, making this experience tedious to sip. This beer reminds me of the time I decided to take a sip of almond extract. That was a bad idea. The beer lacks balance and harmony.

And the honor goes to one of my Idaho favorites, Sawtooth, and their 8th anniversary pastry Stout. Coconut immediately apparent at the crack of the can, strong aroma, purs this between a Mounds bar and tanning oil. Luscious chocolate, heaps of almond, amaretto and that ever present coconut make for a decadent, succulent brew that's not readily forgotten.
