Evil Genius Beer Co. "This One Time At Band Camp"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "021717" and sampled on 032217
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: "Single hopped with Mosaic", that can't be bad. Only 30 IBUs? OK, I'm down with that. Nice appearance: slightly hazy deep golden body - possibly from dry hopping, frothy white head. Pretty good head retention so far, and I think, lacing as well. Aroma: resinous and tropical hops with a bit of berry thrown in... mango, melon, papaya, soft orange, and a touch of pine. I'm not sure I'm finding any malt in there, although it has to be adding some sweetness to support those hops. Flavor: more malt, but very basic, and almost doughy rather than grainy. The 30 IBUs are solid, and I'd imagine it's actually higher. Dry finish with lingering bitterness. Labeled as 8% ABV. That may be a little bit higher as well - there is an alcohol presence although it doesn't directly appear until the lingering finish. Ahhh, the lacing is quite nice, and it's still got almost a complete surface covering. I think it smells better than it tastes as those aromas don't come through nearly as clearly in the flavor, although that is quite common within the style. And I feel the balance could be better, although, again, it's not outside of what's to be expected, and it's also a fairly wide style in terms of how much malt sweetness there can or cannot be. Body-wise I think it's fine, medium to medium-full and gently crisp - although a dollop of malt does stick on the palate at the finish. That's OK though. So, hmmm, what else to say... ? Great aroma, average overall in comparison to dozens of other double IPAs.
P.S. - So my rating is 3.91 out of 5 with a current deviation of +21.8 - I might be a little high, I'm usually +3 to 4, but certainly not by that much - this beer is underrated. Perhaps that's based on last year's version, so we'll see what happens.

Look: An orange look with out much of a head to it after a soft pour.
Smell: Melons as the primary aroma and there are other fruits; seems like cantaloupe.
Taste: Tastes a lot like a mouthful that I'd expect after skiing into a pine tree. Literally, nothing tasted here other then strong notes of pine.
Feeling: A soft carbonation that is a pleasant one to let sit in the back of your throat.
Overall: My trusted package store employee of many years recommended this beer to me off the top of his head. I have now begun to doubt his expertise in this field.

Cloudy, neutral gold color. Small head with very little lace (a couple of spots).
Strong smell of beef stew and earthy (a friend called mossy/forest floor) along with some pure malt sugar.
Lots of sweetness almost as if the brewer added malt sugar AFTER fermentation. The hop is relatively light and doesn't last through the aftertaste very long. Full bodied as one might expect, but the carbonation enhances this by being very low.
Overall, I think this is a clear miss to the style and to most high-quality beers.

A: Bright orange, with a a translucent quality, and a big show of micro-effervesce filling the vessel. Creamy, antique white head is 0.5inches and holds nicely for its slight size. Lace stickage is very good, with an ample amount of coverage.
S: Fresh breakfast juice, melon and spicy hops, but very light in strength, could of benefited from some more ummph. A bit of underlying oniony grass hops, with an overall very short duration period.
T: A bit of grassy hops on the opening along with some pine. The flavor is hard to pick out, no real outstanding or individual notes that seem to take over, a bit muddled and lacks attention getting flavor. Bitterness is low, a bit of dry hay, and grass on the swallow with a slight warmth of breakfast fruit yeastiness.
M: Mouthful was light, oily, decent carbonation, but not really crisp.
O: The flavor seems a bit subdue, complexity is lacking or rather does little to stand out. An average drink at best, ok, labeled as an double ipa which kinda adds insult to injury, i know its borderline 3 months, but i don't expect to much more fresh. An 2x ipa that can easily be mistaken for a sub-pale, the abv% of 8.5 is extremely well hidden, unfortunately so was the hop program here. sub 80 for me overall.
