There's a lot of crossover appeal between hops and lemongrass as many hop varieties harbor lemongrass-like attributes. But with the generous use of the Asian herb to an IPA gives the Evil Genius Beer Company the uniqueness that's needed to set themselves apart from others in a crowded hop market; and they're not likely to give it up anytime soon.
More than just a cheesy trip down memory lane, Never Goinna Give You Up pours a cheery hazy bronze color and crowned with a frothy eggshell foam. Spicy, floral and malty, the nose is chocked full of caramel coated citrus, herb and spruce. Sweet flavors of winter's honey, caramel and granola give the beer a certain trail mix appeal.
Boldly malted the IPA's slow release of sweetness has the honey lingering on the tongue deep into the middle palate. Balanced by its growing hops, the taste of apricot, apple, white grapefruit, orange and lemon all seem on the slightly over ripened side before trailing into a bitter and spicy late palate, taking on the character of pine sap, damp grasses and the overt character of true lemongrass.
Medium bodied and finishing malty dry, the herb spices allow for a vegetal derived astringency to apply a sharpness to taste that overwhelms what the hops try to do. Stale bread and honey leave lasting impressions into a medium long aftertaste, accompanied by macerated fruit peels and piths.

It is Evil Genius night here at Chez Woody as I have a couple to drink, review & rate. Never mind that they are both bottles. The tide has turned & bottles are a dying breed.
From the Bottle: "Lemongrass IPA".
I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass. This one performed much more like I expected, rising unbidden to two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention. Color was solid Gold (SRM = 5) with NE-quality clarity, enticing The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Midas & Mammon to drop by for a taste. Nose was a back to basics for the style - a simple pine & lemongrass bitterness along with a biscuit maltiness. Phew! No haze, no tropical fruit, no B.S. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, almost creamy, but not quite to that point. The taste had a nice bite with the lemongrass really coming through, accompanied by pine and underlain with biscuit malt. The label marked it as 37 IBUs, but I would have guessed somewhat higher. I liked that it tasted more bitter than advertised, but that may not be a selling point for everyone. Finish was dry, bitter, citrusy & just what the doctor ordered for this hophead. YMMV.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Nearly clear golden pour with 2 fingers of fluffy white head. Nice sticky lacing.
S: Bready malts and grains. Lemongrass and citrus hops. Mild pine.
T/F: Sweet and malty... bread... citrusy hops... lemon and mild grapefruit. Light resin/pine, but very mild. Well balanced... lemongrass present but subdued. Light bodied... well carbonated.
O: An easy drinking IPA. Nothing crazy... good flavor, easy drinking, and kind of an 'every day' beer. Glad I tried it.

Evil Genius Beer Company "Never Gonna Give You Up"
12 fl. oz brown glass bottle, "BTLON: 021218 01:18 PM" and sampled on 040418
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: India Pale Ale with lemongrass, eh? I've had one of those before and I recall liking it so let's see... it's got a hazy amber body beneath a finger-thick head of foamy off-white. It's dropped a little bit already, right off of the bat, but it seems to be holding OK. I'll just wait it out... ... didn't take too long; I'll call it average to better than average head retention. As for lacing what's there now looks good but we'll see. On to the aroma... citrusy and lightly piney and tropical with some sweetish grainy malt. There may or may not be some lemongrass in there, it's not the boldest of aromas, but it works. The flavor follows and there's definitely some lemongrass flavor that helps to round it out and liven it, giving it an almost "island" feel. It kind of sticks on the front of the tongue. It's interesting and playful. It's not a big and bold IPA, but more of an everyday drinking IPA with a twist. I like it. Charming and unusual. Moderately bitter, kind of like an amped up pale ale in many ways. In the mouth it's medium bodied with a dextrinous side that makes it feel fuller, and gently crisp which might explain some of the limited head retention. Nicely done.

Picked up at Wegman's in Williamsport and surprisingly the first to enter this on BA. Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is gold, transparent, head is off white and presents 1/2 inch thick at least.
Smell is simple yet very good with clean malt, toasty and lightly sweet, hint of lemongrass and citrus.
Taste follows with some malt, light toast and sweetness, then lemongrass comes through.
Mouthfeel was crisp, moderate carbonation, dry finish.
Overall a good brew which might actually be better without the lemongrass as I like EG's malt base in this beer.
