Pours a rich mahogany color with good clarity and foamy head. The aroma was hoppy as well as lushly malty. Hop notes of pine, herbs and resin mix with a hint of toast and yeast driven fruit esters. The taste is quite nice and very balanced with ample bitterness, slight smoke and the candied fruit/fig jelly finish of an East End Gratitude Barleywine. Make no mistake this is a very different beer than East End's usual take on the style. A small portion of smoked malt is used, along with Amarillo hops (or it was El Dorado, one of the two). This was a full bodied, big beautiful beer, and the hops coupled with smoke gave it a unique astringency not always found in the style. Earthy and dry version of Barleywine, not a sweet one that's for sure. Good stuff, more East End Collabs in the future please!
