DEFINITION: n. 1. punchy red chair photobombing Powell River landscapes since August 2010 2. a refreshingly zesty sour red ale.
Townsite's first sour offering, this beer had lactobacillus added to it before having the house yeast added on top. It has powerful Pear & Strawberry notes on the nose with a tangy zip of sourness in the first sip.

12 oz. sampled on tap at Beer Revolution in Calgary, part of a current sour festival. Arrived a flat rusty brown color (a little like dried blood) with orange highlights and a thin layer of beige bubbles on top.
Aroma is expectedly tart and tangy, recalling several types of sour fruit with a touch of vanilla nougat and cacao powder. Taste is big cranberry, lemon-lime, red grape, pie cherry, and rhubarb with a subtle salty beef jerky vibe. A tinge of caramel peaks out but this is not a sweet brew. Very fruity and tart but minimal barnyard or other funky notes. Less complex than old world examples of the style, or perhaps just less sweet. Body on the thin side, drinkable with low carbonation. Very sour finish that recalls red wine vinegar.
Enjoyable enough sour. Great red and vinous fruit flavors. Could use a dash more sweetness for balance purposes.

12oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG's sour festival.
This beer appears a clear, bright medium copper amber hue, with one anemic finger of weakly bubbly and generally wispy beige head, which leaves damned near nil in terms of lace in the vicinity of the glass.
It smells of somewhat off, and thin red wine, crackery pale malt, a touch of caramel sweetness, hot chocolate powder, further tart light orchard fruit, and a soft nutty and earthy hoppiness. The taste is mildly tart and musty red grapes, earthy and faintly cheesy yeast, grainy caramel malt, mixed astringent dark fruit, a subtle nuttiness, and ethereal weedy hops.
The bubbles are pretty understated in their tame frothiness, the body medium-light in weight, and plainly smooth, the edgy fruitiness not trifling here. It finishes off-dry, the now languishing sour vinous fruit still lording it over the native malt.
Overall, a pepped-up Canadian red ale, and no more, I'm afraid. The extra little bit of red wine acerbity can't save the day when the base beer is so banal and uninteresting. Next.
