Destroyed by the Empire - 15.6%

After four years in heavily toasted Woodford Double Oaked barrels, this micro-lot of Deth's Tar Imperial Oatmeal Stout hits the palate like an oaky superlaser blast from the vacuous ether. Each sip starts as a wave of concentrated malt-derived chocolate and graham before rapidly yielding to a lumberous overlord cloaked in cherry & vanilla.

Had on tap. The depth of the barrel on this one is just stupid! Pitch black pour with a brown head. Smells has the barrel lifting up vanilla, dark fruits, molasses, dark chocolate and a hint of anise. Taste again leads with the magnificent barrel, the oak is particular has great complexity with rustic toastiness and vanilins, big dark fruit, caramel, boozy oat, molasses and chocolate fudge round out. Feel is boozy in a very warm way, great barrel character defines

Vanilla, marshmallow, oak, wet musty wood, and some tart fruity notes. Spritzy, lively carbonation. Comes across a bit hot, albeit to be expected for a beer that spent this long in barrels and is 15% + ABV.

If you've been keeping this crowler in the fridge, take it out and let it warm up a bit. All the oak, fudge, and booze you could ever ask for, with a lovely vanilla finish. I can't wait for next year's release, Hit in the Face with a Barrel.

Crowler filled 12/10/20; drank 12/12/20 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small tan head; no lace.

Bourbon, oak & fudge notes in the nose; as this warmed, the fudge came to the forefront.

Creamy, thick mouthfeel; a bit flat, but since the beer has been in a barrel for 4 years maybe that's expected.

Fudge, strong bourbon heat & oak flavors. As this warmed, the fudge & the bourbon heat took over. This was interesting, and certainly bold, but wasn't subtle enough for me to call a classic.

Very good, but not quite great.
