Appearance: Clear, golden yellow body with lots of visible carbonation and a frothy, bubbly, quivering white head with decent structure. Patchy lacing.
Smell: Honey-roasted German malts, grainy, bready, and sweet. Light leafy/grassy/spicy hops in the background.
Taste: The balance of hops and malts here is the complete opposite of the nose. Round, well-developed hops coat the mouth with a citric/leafy/herbal bitterness. Malts mostly provide backbone, with a light, unobtrusive, fresh-grain sweetness. Finish is dry but not what I would necessarily call "clean," leaving a long-lingering smack of hops.
Mouthfeel: Even though this is a light style, I think this is a bit too light to carry the hops.
Drinkability: Very nice. I hope Kirin releases more of these "Fukkoku" brews, because they're some of the best I've had from any of the big four in Japan since I got here.
