Dragging the stalwart pilsner into the summertime party, the brewers at Props gives their flagship lager a jolt of fun with generous additions of blueberries for interest and a overlay of complexity.
Turning the attention from the subtle malts and hop spice and toward the fruit, Blueberry Pilsner pours a subtle lavender color on a slightly bronze body. Bright in clarity and building an arid ivory froth, the lager leads with a fruity twang that's remiss of dark berries along with a subtle grain and floral fruit blossom scent. A mild mannered sweetness shows the cereal character and medium malt impact of the beer hidden underneath the fruit.
As a light honey and fresh bread sweetness fades, the blueberries shine more and more, giving a robust fruit flavor but with a drying tanginess of the fruit's acidity. As hops turn from floral and toward spice, they influence the slight pectin character of fruit with bitterness, dryness and spice of their own.
Medium light in body but with a slightly more elevated taste, the beer's complexity relies on the bold taste of blueberry even as its own fruitiness suggests lightness in finish. A medium short aftertaste of blueberry slightly outlasts any pilsner taste for a flavor that's sure to beat the Florida heat.
