Imperial Golden Ale
Poured into a tulip glass, a bright honey gold colour, fairly good clarity, some slight carbonation, with a large white head, good retention and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. 4.25
S – ripe fruitiness, apple, lemon, melon, bready malts, also a lot of spice going on, coriander/clove, some of the alcohol is evident here as well. 3.75
T – an interesting combination of lemony citrus, tart melon, grainy and honey malts with a slight yeasty character, giving a puckering tartness with some musty barn and hay notes, ripe fruits of melon, pineapple, apricot, leading to a full finish, crisp dryness, lemon and honey, grainy malts with a bit of alcohol spiciness. Overall it is fairly mild, and quite balanced, but with not enough complexity or depth to really live up to its potential. 3.75
M – malt forward moderate/big body, this has some issues balancing out the high ABV, there is some moderate light carbonation, beer does feel quite heavy and seems to have a lot of alcohol presence. 3.5
As a malt-forward high-strength ale, I thought it relied too much on the alcohol to provide the driving flavor, there are 51 IBUs but you wouldn’t really pick up on the hops other than some lemon citrus and slightly tropical fruits. Kind of like a high-strength Pale Ale, it does have some pretty good flavor but is fairly unexcited and had a lot of potential left to be fulfilled. 3.75
