SAmpling a cellar temp 22 oz waxed bottle of this beer. A gift from my brother Curt. thank you! Bottle has been in my cellar since I received it about 2.5 years ago.
Beer is an instant gusher when I pop the cap. Even the slightest seal break causes lots of sudsy beer to push out of the bottle onto my table..... :( Only about 2 oz spills out and then is basically a little foam at the opening of the bottle.
The beer pours into my snifter a bright clear chestnut color with faint pinkish highlights. A frothy eggshell white head gushes up 4 inches even with a gentle pour. This foam fades slowly to a sturdy surface covering and leaves scattered lacing on the sides of my glass.
The aroma is light and fruity with some white grape and pear notes mixing with a little bit of tart raspberry and general sour notes. I dont get any hop character. At least the smell is close to what I would expect and doesnt have any astringent or infected notes to it.
The first sip reveals a very light and thin body with fine and spacious carbonation. This feels a little sticky on my lips and honestly is more like a white wine than a beer in terms of texture and feel.
Flavor is some light fruits again white grape and pears with a bit of a floral honey note and then some general tart and sour hit, and the finish is sort of boozy, black pepper bite, which surprises me for a 6% beer.
I dont feel that this bottle was infected, but that it may have still fermented in the bottle and built up pressure. It seems like it was a fine fruit beer, not amazing and maybe a little thin on the mouthfeel. But the flavor is fine.
I dont think I would buy this one again, and not even that interested in learning what it tastes like fresher.
