In a world where hops rule, the battle for the perfect balance of flavours is never-ending.

MOHAWP is hammered with the greatness of citrusy Northern and juicy Southern hemisphere hops, then hit with mango puree to balance out the massive 10.3% alc./vol.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned November 21/24. My 6th beer from the Kanata, Ontario brewery, and 5th for 2025. Reflected upon wistfully by Gracie the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Nov 11 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy golden-yellow colour, sporting nearly two inches of puffy, foamy white head that disintegrates rapidly. A couple of minutes later, I'm left with a creamy collar and a frothy cap floating just beneath a narrow band of lace. A little bit of ethanol on the nose, with grapefruit pith, mango, bubblegum and dank, floral hops; the aroma is actually rather understated, leaning towards underwhelming for an imperial IPA.

Tastes fine, at least initially: the mango isn't especially dominant, allowing hop-derived flavours of grapefruit, passion fruit and Pinot Noir to assert themselves. Bready pale malts and oats provide helpful background support. Muddled, fruity conclusion with tropical fruit, citrus, floral hops and dank bitterness mashed together; a modest boozy warmth crescendos into the aftertaste, which I found mildly offensive, at least for the first couple of sips. After that, my taste buds adjusted, and I managed to enjoy the rest of the glass. Full-bodied, with assertive carbonation that adds some prickliness to this strong IPA's smooth & substantial mouthfeel. Poor drinkability, but that comes with the territory.

Final Grade: 3.65, a serviceable B grade. Mohawp Triple IPA is tasty, but it's also rough around the edges, particularly on the tail end: everything seemed hunky-dory after that first gulp, but that's because the 10.3% had not yet spoken up. It sneaks up on you a second later, and not in a charming how-do-you-do-sir kind of manner... it's just plain boozy. Of course, this is a TIPA, so some level of heat is unavoidable - and to be fair, subsequent sips became less and less harsh - but better integration would've been appreciated. I'd still try this again, but only if I came across a fresh batch.

Pours clear orange with a clingy head that coats the glass in lace. The aroma is of mango, citrus and some cookie dough. The taste follows suit with a sweet mango character - mango puree is added. Some pineapple and floral hops in there too as well as a girth of pale malts. The mouthfeel is lightly carbonated and full bodied. Moderate bitterness in the finish with the high ABV being concealed well.

Quite approachable and balanced for a mega IPA. I recommend this.
