Cascadian Dark Ale or CDA, goes back around 25 years as a regional style of dark, hoppy beer which popped up largely independently in the PNW and in New England. On that side they went for basically a hoppy Schwartzbier, dark but little to no roast flavor. On this coast, brewers tended to embrace a little more of the roasty/caramel flavors along with the hops. Thus, the beer geeks began “The Great CDA vs Black IPA Debate”.
