Yes there is such a thing as too much. In my opinion it was too much flavour. To be fair, saison is not my thing, but it sure was a bold move to brew something like this. I was happy to try it but wouldn’t buy it if it came in any normal six pack. A one is enough kid nd of brew.

341ml bottle, day 16 of 'The Great White Wonder Adventure Pack', a collaboration between Central City and Parallel 49 to provide a Beer Advent (I can say that, even if they can't) holiday experience. A 'Szechuan Peppercorn Saison'.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with four fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat fizzy eggshell white head, which leaves some stellar layered silly string lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.

It smells of spicy rainbow peppercorns, gritty and grainy wheat malt, estery Belgian yeast, a bit of lemon tartness, and some plain earthy, musty, and herbal green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and crackery pale malt, a minor edgy wheatiness, still mixed pepper notes, some odd banana bubblegum, a subtle old-school yeastiness, ephemeral domestic citrus rind, and more understated leafy, weedy, and floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite active in its frolicking frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and more or less smooth, once you get acclimatized to the zesty pepper essence. It finishes trending dry, the malt stepping back, and the pepper and yeast gently lingering.

Overall - I wasn't sure about this one at the outset, but it turned out all right in the end. Mostly this comes across as a version of the style where they have simply amped up the typical peppery character, yet it's hardly heavy-handed. Worth checking out, IMHO.
