[BANISHED] In The Pocket

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Bright, clear golden, big instant head fades quickly. Grainy, floral aroma, fruity. Very welcoming. Taste Is sweet and savory, fells is slick and oily. White pepper, oranges, lemons. Not much of the ABV is evident. Delicious.

 

 

 

I'm going to go a little unconventional here, as the aroma, description, and appearance all demand attention at once. Aged in red wine barrels leaves zero indication in the dark brass body, but the aroma explodes of the red grapes must. Brilliantly clear with a quickly fading off white head which leaves absolutely no trace of existing at all.

Backpedaling to the aroma, buried deep beneath the barrel and wine is a delicate and funky acidity. Green apple skins with a touch of peppery spice.

While no stand out Saison characteristics pop, this is equally like drinking a 50/50 blend of Cabernet and a no frills American Wild Ale. Funky and sour, tons of barrel, and that intense tannic finish of our favorite grape adult beverages.

Along those lines, heavy booze warmth accommodates a thin and slick body. Balanced but just favoring a SweetTart likeness, and dangerously smooth despite the 9.9% advertisement.

While a good and unique experience, this is probably my least favorite of the [BANISHED] series I've had. One and done but still tons of fun.

SAVOR DC 2018

a blend of imperial wild saisons aged in red wine barrels, some older than others from what i understand, and just an awesome beer overall, drinking way lighter than its listed abv, and full of funk and wild complexity. its clear and golden and bright for what it is, really pretty beer under an inch of fine bubbled white head. it smells tart right away, there is a very sour element in the blend here, with a slight white wine vinegar property making my mouth water, but also a developed brett complexion that really makes this rustic and old school to me. i get plenty of the red wine fruitiness in the flavor, faint cranberry and currant or something a little astringent too, and then all the wood, which is smoothing and uniting the various elements. the balance between funk and sour is excellent, and there is a lot of grain character here too, richer and bigger, some protein and some honey sweetness at the center, but drier and more relaxed as it moves along from there. great yeast complexity here, excellent carbonation, and more wine influence than anticipated. excellent beer overall, no trace of its strength, and one of the more refined beers in this series from my recollection. always fun to drink new flavors from crux, i have been impressed with their body of work so far!

edit: the 2019 edition of this, on tap at the brewery, was insane, even better than i remember it being from the bottle several years ago, when i first loved it. the fruitiness of this is crazy, bursting natural mango, white grape, and pineapple candy, its rich feeling but dry, and less sour and more bretty than i remember too, just amazingly fragrant and flavorful, ripe peach, juicy citrus, its all here, incredibly unique and delicious, one of their best in my opinion, and the alcohol doesnt show up hardly at all. wow, what a beer!

1L howler from Keg n Cork in south Edmonton - a blend of red wine barrel aged and young Imperial Saisons, with the name coming from some obscure jazz reference.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden yellow colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves some approaching ice mass profile lace around the glass as it quickly bleeds out of sight.

It smells of tart, indistinct red fruit, dry vanilla pods, musty barrel staves, gritty and grainy pale malt, crackery wheat, a bit of subtle Brett funkiness, further muddled tropical fruity notes, and some very weak earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is apple-forward white wine on lees, an additional generic cherry and raspberry red vino fruitiness, some wet woody essences, grainy and doughy cereal malt, thankfully still ethereal funk, and more well understated musty, leafy, and herbal hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly laid-back in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, as the tart fruity esters and faded funk have but a minor bearing here. It finishes off-dry, with the malt and wood-tinged fruit showing some lingering fortitude.

Overall - this is a very well-rendered version of whatever style it purports to be (one that seems to have surpassed the general category on BA). Nice and fruity, with a pleasantly low-key yeasty and/or funky character. Worth the dear shelf taggery for an admittedly hefty serving size.

 

 

Clear golden yellow, pours a nice head, no retention.

Great barrel and Brett aroma: woody, leather, tropical fruit. All comes they in the flav, with a bit of warming alcohol in the finish, but it's pretty well hidden.

Well attenuated moderate body has a crisp finish.

Perhaps this bottle has aged gracefully, but I think this is severely underrated.

2019 Crux In The Pocket
Imperial Saison aged in NW red wine barrels with Brett Lambicus and Brux

Pours a cloudy golden straw with no foam and very little lacing. Nose is vinuous, with some gooseberry and crackery grain. Taste follows, with moderate acidity, spicy phenols and some lemon zest. Spritzy carbonation. Overall, refreshing and complex, more than just a one-note sour.

On draught at the Orenco Taphouse, In the Pocket is clear gold, still with the thinnest little white collar.

Smell is funky and herbal hops .

Taste vinous, green apple a little yeasty/bread dough, but of barnyard. Starts with Granny Smith and finishes with chablis. Nice, but a little nail polish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, off dry.

Drinakability is high if you like the wine and fruit notes. High ABV is dangerously hidden.
