its cool to have these guys in the colorado market now, they are clearly up to some pretty interesting stuff. this one is open fermented, and frankly, i almost wish it wasnt, as with that technique i expected this beer to be a whole lot more interesting than it is. its a nice saison, dont get me wrong, but its not way different, the first of their beers ive had to be a little generic, although the more it warms up the more i am liking it. only a little fog to the pale yellow beer. short lived white head on it doent make it five minutes. there is also almost no sediment on the bottom of the bottle, so perhaps its filtered in some way. it smells belgiany, esters all over the place, and a little sharp like the 3711 french saison can be sometimes, especially when done warm. i know they pitched yeast into this and its not a wild ale, but i expected some funk for an open fermented beer, and its not there, its actually just the opposite, super clean. the flavor is a little more interesting, with some light peppery spice to it, green peppercorn kind of thing, vegetal at the same time, white wine notes, and then a really dry finish with soft carbonation. its cool because after the swallow, it sort of flushes back in, mouthwatering without sourness or acidity, i like that sensation and dont often feel it. in the end i like it more and more as i work on it, but it leaves a little something to be desired i think in terms of complexity and yeast character.

Had from a 500mL brown glass bottle purchased at a Walgreens on Holgate in SE Portland. Bottled on date of either 05/13/15 or 05/15/15. Hard to read.

Pours a light hazy golden color with a very weak white head that dissipates almost immediately. It sports ample carbonation, but almost no head whatsoever.

Pretty aromas of fresh-cut lemon, ripe peach, farmhouse funk, light untoasted grain, grains of paradise, clove, grass, herbs, and unripe pineapple.

Zippy and vibrant on the palate with a lithe citrusy acidity, orange peel, subtle spiciness, and generous malty backbone. Some pleasant spicy funkiness on the finish.

The beer is spicy and herbacious up front. A good wheaty body. Very dry and clean on the back end.

A wonderful classic saison that tastes very traditional, but also exceptional.

500 ml Euro style bottle bough from Lifesource Grocers in Salem OR. $5.99 Pours a very light gold colour with nice carbonation strings and a large frothy white head. Spicy ,peppery aromas, quite earthy in aspect. Some banana and clove. Nice. Taste is similar to the aroma and very energetic in the fusion. Nice well carbonated mouth feel with a drying finish that invites another sip. Very nice indeed....wish it wasn’t in such small bottles!

Poured from 500mL bottle into my Selkirk Abbey tulip.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a moderate haze and a very strong effervescence. Head poured four fingers of inconveniently huge white foam. Head retention is very good and a big chunky lace is left on the glass as it slowly dissipates. Very attractive.

Smell: sweet malt with a light funk, a little bit of grassiness and just a hint of tartness. I think it is a balanced and sophisticated saison.

Taste: much like the aroma, the flavors are subtle but balanced, and the overall effect is one of well-wrought simplicity. The light, clean funk, combined with an almost wheaty malt character and the light grassiness make for a very smooth and satisfying saison experience.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a gargantuan carbonation and concomitantly large creaminess. Sha-daisy!

Overall: a very satisfying, drinkable and refreshing saison. I'm a big fan.

For my 3,000th review, here's one of my favorites of 2014. I have had enough clumsy, fat-headed Saisons. This one is great. It has the classic sudsy Saison mouthfeel and appearance. Golden color with a fine-grained head and bubbles streaming in the Kasteel chalice. Some light sediment that only clouds the last pour.

There is a slightly sweet, rather fruity, malty flavor. This reminds me of the perfect French farmhouse cider. Just a little sugar and a long, drying champagne finish. The yeasty taste is not overly strong but it has some sharp and tangy notes with a deep nose.

Ah, the apples. Spicy and fuming with aromatic fruit. This is just an excellent example of the style and well worth seeking out. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Wine World and Spirits in north Seattle.

16.9 oz bottle, bottled on 11/12/13. Pours hazy straw yellow with a monstrous bubbly white head that retains well and laces the glass a little.

The aroma is sweet bready malts, with some earthy yeast and spice (coriander) and some soapy floral notes.

The flavor is sweet bready malts with some earthy fruits and medium bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with sharp carbonation.

Overall, an OK saison. It's too sweet and soapy / floral for me.

Thanks to HuskyinPDX for this bottle, the last glass standing from our late fall-time trade. 500ML bottle with Crux packaging that I like, cool but not overdoing it. Split with my wife.

Even with the dregs dumped into the glass, the pour leans towards clear, light yellow. The nose is Lemon Pledge & Chiquita Bananas with a backing of almost hefe-like wheat grains.

Impasse would please anything in the ape or gorilla family. Bananas explode out of the glass in a yellowish cloud: there's more banana in this than in most bananas. Plenty else in the mix. Healthy dose of off-white pepper, mild bitterness in the middle (hops?), plenty of lemon, bit of wheat, grassiness. No funk at all. Very, very dry. I could have taken the entire 500ML without any problem.

This is a very good beer. Lacking the musty funk of most saisons, it more than makes up for it with a wild variety of tastes & a drinkability rarely found in the style. I am pleased.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a slightly hazy light straw amber with a three finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma is spicy saisaon style yeast, light citrus; pepper. Flavor is light stone fruit, mild orange family citrus, saison yeast, pepper, coriander, starts semi dry, but finishes with a developing light sweetness and a bit more light stone fruit esters, mild hop bitterness and a touch of wild yeast. Medium bodied with peppery carbonation. A nice Belgian saison style ale with an interesting balance between dry and sweet flavors. Good saison yeast presence without an overwhelming wild yeast funkiness. This is a saison exactly to my taste, with a hint of Belgian pale fruit esters keeping things interesting. That's three for three enjoyable beers from Crux so far and I intend to keep trying them.

500mL (bottled 10/7/2013) into a tulip. Pours a pale hazy straw color w/ a 1-finger white head, patchy lace, moderate carb.

Aroma is funky, spicy, lemony. Estery Belgian yeast and just a touch of bubblegum.

Taste follows nose. Coriander, white pepper, lemon. Pale neutral malt. Funky, grassy Belgian yeast.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, just a little prickly, semi-dry finish. Refreshing.

Overall an across-the-board solid saison. Well done.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy light yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, yeast, spice, and citrus aromas. Taste is much the same with grain and citrus flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of yeast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid aromas and flavors for the style.

Thanks to Rbald42 for sending this my way.

Appearance: Pours a light, slightly hazy straw color. Tons of carbonation apparent. A solid 2" eggshell white head forms which has great retention and lacing.

Smell: Banana, cloves, esters, yeast character. Very refreshing smell and right for the style.

Taste: Banana, cloves, a bit yeasty, wheat malts. Very light and very refreshing. Extremely drinkable.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Great mouthfeel. Light, highly carbonated, does not drink remotely like 7% ABV. Again, extremely refreshing. Overall this is a very enjoyable beer. Definitely worth a try. I need to try more Crux.

550ml : tulip

Clear, golden yellow with a thick, foamy white head and nice lacing.

Very inviting nose, fruity, yeasty easters. Light peppery spice. The taste follows the same profile.

Medium+ fluffy body, with foamy carbonation.

I really enjoyed this saison. Bold, complex flavors without being overwhelming.

1/2 liter bottle poured into my Bier Stein snifter, Impasse is clear light gold with a big white head leaving light foamy lace.

Smell is fruity esters and lightly herbal, a brightness too it.

Taste is spicy, phenolic, tropical fruits. Bold.

Mouthfeel light bodied and very foamy, dry.

Drinkability is pretty good, the flavors are good, just a little too exaggerated for my taste to be too drinkable.

500ml bottle

Heavy carbonation, pale orange body with a huge white froth. This saison is bone-dry. Light citrus from the relatively high hop levels, grass, lots of white pepper, yeasty zest. This is good, but not fantastic - refreshing but mouthfeel was a bit off.

Bottle opened on 6.13.13

A - Pours a hazy very light orange with a large foamy light-cream colored head with good retention.

S - Strong spices, some black pepper, strong saison yeast.

T - Strong spices, yeast, lemon.

D - Lots of carbonation with a light body.

O - My first Crux. Light and very spice heavy. Solid, but improves greatly as it warms.

mid aroma, low to mid carbonation, wheat slight honey flora chamomile taste. It is tasting nice to me - have my tastes changed?!

Big thanks to libbey for this bottle... bottled on A(pril) 2013...

A: Pours a hazy, bright and light yellow with a huge amount of pure white bubbly head. The foam takes quite awhile to settle, leaving a rocky layer along the edges of the beer.

S: The nose is lemon, spice, yeast, and fresh cut grass. It's bright and refreshing, perfectly sour, and smells incredibly inviting. I can't wait to try this.

T: Mmmm. It starts out with a great mix of sweet and sour. I get lemons, clove, yeast, grass, candy cigarettes, white pepper, and some dirt. This beer is great. I don't know if I can explain how the beer changes on the palate over time. The flavors just sort of mingle and mix together from start to finish. Really nice.

M: Light bodied beer. It's bright and refreshing as it hits the palate. The sweet, sour, and spice are all perfectly balanced as you drink this beer. The finish is a bit drying, but this beer goes down way too quickly. Great carbonation on this beer as well. Prickly, but not off-putting.

O: Excellent beer. I need more of this in my life. Saison are one of my favorite styles, and this one hits the mark spot on. Delicious. I sincerely hope I'll be able to try this beer again in the future.

Picked up from the brewery in Bend.

a: it was perfectly cloudy with a lastly head, stuck around. with a nice golden color. Beautiful.

s: smells very yeasty. Not too medicinal in any way, just a nice bubblegum zestiness.

t: starts with a nice amount of bitterness, a decent juiciness from the hops (must be fresh) and an awesome wheat-character. The yeast plays more in the aftertaste.

Overall, almost a perfect Saison. Not my favorite style, but I enjoyed this one immensely. Definitely a must buy.
