Belgian Tripel brewed with Niagara Grape Must from the Magnanini Farm Winery
While the Hudson Valley region of New York continues to grow as a beer destination, it has long been on the map for wine lovers. In honor of that proud tradition of wine making, we bring you Magnanini Niagara Tripel.
Magnanini Farm Winery is a local, family-owned Hudson Valley winery. Their Niagara Grapes were used in the brewing of our Belgian Tripel. The Niagara grape must was boiled to a syrup, which replaced the Belgian Candi sugar that would normally be found in a Belgian Tripel.
Brettanomyces is a vintner’s worst nightmare. But in this beer, it brings pleasant notes reminiscent of cotton candy & bubble gum. The highly fermentable grapes result in a supremely dry finish. The nose & start of the beer showcases the wine, while the finish is dominated by Belgian beer characteristics.

One of a large number of samples I had at the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston 3/21/32014. Grape jelly and tripel, interesting.

Mini-growler from the brewery.
Looks like a triple with a tight lacing and deep golden color. Expressive aroma with suggestions of grape taffy, white pepper, chalky yeast, and exotic fruit esters. Mild smoothness rides the creamy semi-chewy mouthfeel. Loving this grape wine-like tartness within the body of a Tripel. Bubblegum, taffy, & cotton candy all wrapped in one. Kiss of alcohol and chalky yeast with a dry graininess in the finish.
While this might not be the best Tripel out there but it is most definitely one of the most interesting.
