Very dark red-brown with a huge pile of stiff off-white foam. If you like a handsome foamy brew, this is one of the loveliest. Frothy mouthfeel with an underlying sugary sweetness. If caramel smells, that's what this smells like. Also aroma of fruitcake.
Flavors of something darkly fruity, like raisins with a touch of rum. The richness is toned down somewhat by the surprising hoppiness. They claim 55 IBUs. This is certainly the biggest and most flavorful Old Ale I've tried. It has the classic flavor, just amped up beyond the usual.
Label is stamped "Bottled on May 21, 2015" which was a year ago, so it's an old Old Ale. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Clem's Liquor in San Diego.
