This is my second from Maenhout and I was impressed by the passion in both. (The other was an RIS via the Rare Brew Club that was one of the better desserts I've had.) This husband/wife team has brewing together very tight. Expressive ales. For all that, I give Maenhout very good Overall Hugs.

So it is with Koeketiene. Expressive Looking certainly with a huge foam and very active protein swirls remind what this style is supposed to achieve. This active yeast also kicks the malt to produce lots of fruit, though that is less distinct; other than to remind me of the fall harvest of hard fruit like apples and pears. Tastes have one problem: the attack is alcoholic. After I became inured to the fumes, the fruits came back that I had smelled. There is a slightly peppery finish which I presume to be the yeast still working overtime. Medium-mouthed, but lusciously soft. Have again? Yes, but must first find again. A Sante' !

Copenhagen 27/8 2023. 33 cl bottle from Spar, Langestraat, Oostende. Drawing of a lady in Harlequin outfit on label.

Pours slightly unclear, golden yellow with a big white head. Stable. Settles as 4 cm thick layer of foam completely obscuring the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet fruity and yeasty odor mingling with a sourish acidity. Sweet banana and pear. Whiff of moldy cellar. Sour grains and citrus.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong sourish bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a sourish undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is sweet and boozy.

Solid fruity, Belgian Tripel.

Brown 75cl bottle: best before 21 May 2013, brewed 21 May 2011 and opened 01 July 2012 and poured into three glasses in one go, to try and keep the sediment at bay.

Even so the beer was a misty/cloudy looking brew of old gold: on top of each glass a thin wispy head that wasn't intending to stay around for long and didn't.

Spices in the nose along with the sweeter citrus fruits (oranges/tangerines etc. etc), add some yeast esters and a tablespoon full of sugar and you've got the aroma.

The taste is very simular to the smells and there is very little hop presence to give any balance or bitterness. Corinader is mentioned on the label and I tried to find the flavour within the beer but failed.

Not a great example of a Belgian Tripel but a different slant on the style maybe and not what I was expecting.
