Pours nice and black with little head. Light smell of coffee and chocolate and smoke. This is in the general direction it should smell like but its just very subdued. Doesn't pop out the way it should. The taste follows in line. In the right direction but just not enough to put it over the top. It's ok, but leaves you wanting a little more of everything in the end.

Portsmouth Brewing Company - Portsmouth Brewing Vulcan Dark Lager. Unknown ABV. Served in a standard pint glass at the Brewpub.
Look: Pitch black body, arriving with thin white lacing remaining on the sides.
Smell: Mostly dark malts, sweet caramel, and some smoky coffee. Not overly profound, however they are not too weak either.
Feel: Medium bodied, with a fair amount of balancing carbonation.
Taste: Up front is some bitter coffee and dark malts, with some caramel sweetness appearing about midway through. Slightly bitter throughout, but by no means overpowering.
Overall: My first Euro Dark Lager style. This isn't even on the menu at the brewpub since it was considered seasonal. I ordered it since it was a dark beer, and had no idea what style it even was. The aromas and flavors are dull while the beer is cold, so let it warm up a little to experience it fully.

A dark brown coffee color with a modest tan head which breaks down quickly. A mild roasted malt and coffee aroma. Flavor is similar but also picking up a little bit of tobacco. Also has an odd metallic taste at the middle and end. This really hurts the smoothness and drinkability of this beer.
