500ml bottle purchased from the brewery 23.07.01. Can't finde a "bottled on" date. Consumed on 23.07.03; poured into a tulip glass
A - Deep amber, not quite red. Head was unremarkable/insignifacant. Didn't notice any lacing either.
S - I wasn't quite sure what to expect since the description says "somewhere between a saison and a pale ale." Once I opened the bottle, it was obvious; this is definitely a wild ale. Smells like it's gonna be funky and tart.
T - This is spot on for well-done wild ale. Funky and tart, with a complex, grainy, malty body supporting it. Acidity level is approaching my tolerance threshhold, but holding firmly within it. The description says "this beer is wild but not sour." I don't know if i'm just unfamiliar with appropriate beer adjectives, but "sour" does come to mind when I taste this. However, it's a well-balanced, good sour. Paired very well with the salmon and sauteed mushrooms I had.
F - At 5.5% ABV, I would expect this to be a little lighter-bodied, but I'd say the mouthfeel is medium, with medium carbonation. Yeast was at the bottom, so I guess this was bottle-conditioned. I could take little sippy-sips or I could take a quaff and either way was quite enjoyable. It's no guzzler, though.
O - I think the "between a saison and pale ale" description is a little off, even if the name of the beer is "Wild Ale." I think "wild ale" is the only style reference needed. But it is indeed a wonderful wild ale. My wife, who also had her own tulip glass, enjoyed it despite not being a fan of tart/sour beers. If she can enjoy this, I think it must be pretty good.
