On tap at the Pumphouse during their Illawarra takeover many, many moons ago. Reviewed with Shaun the brewer in a position to look over my shoulder any time he wanted, so bear that in mind.
Pours a dark murky red, close to black but clearly colour based. Head is off-white, thin, decent lace and retaining OK. Interesting.
Smells rich, fruity and spicy and interesting and good in general. Tart, with big ripe cherry notes. Vinous, with some vanilla and a big bourbon character. In fact that's all I can smell now. Yeah smells like Jim Beam. In a good way.
Taste has huge bourbon/american oak characters upfront. Gets some dark fruit notes midway with prune, sultana and vinous characters. Some date sweetness and mild tart notes late. Tartness cleans up nicely but could have made its presence felt earlier for the style. Nice fruit spice mix as well but yeah nice enough beer. Just not that great a saison or lambic.
Decent body, has a pull from the yeast. It's good to feel that, as I feel the wilder yeast is lacking on the palate.
Interesting beer. I have high standards when it comes to this kind of style though. This is alright, just a bit lacking style wise.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
