Doppelbock means “Double Bock” and is usually stronger and darker than a traditional Bock. Our take on this winter warmer is a less sweet version of the style. Triple decoction produces a rich malty bier to enjoy as the snow starts to fall.

A true Dopplebock, very nice and easy to drink compared to a lot of beers with the same ABV (8.6% in this case), and definitely less hoppy than you might expect. A surprisingly smooth feel and slight maple-y, malt/bread taste. Sweet enough for someone new to this style to easily enjoy!

12oz bottle. 12/8/18 bottle date. Appearance: Deep ruby red, crystal clear, with a minimal khaki foam head.
Aroma: Toasted bread, bread crust, with some dark fruit, most closely like raisin
Taste: Rich malt sweetness. Bready with a touch of molasses and caramel. Starts sweet but toasted crust emerges late with a slight touch of raisin. Barely enough bitterness to prevent the sweetness from being cloying.
Mouthfeel: On the lighter bodied side for the style, and a low carbonation as well.
Finish: Dark fruit seems most prominent after the swallow with some bread crust and even a touch of roasted malt.
Overall: Beautiful color and clarity, but clearly different than most German versions of the style that have a stronger dark fruit arom and flavor throughout. This is very sweet, with some toasted bread crust to add complexity. Body was a bit lighter than normal for style, and carbonation was fairly low too. Not a bad doppelbock, but I’d pick one of the German versions over this.

Regrettably brief impressions from an 18 month aged bottle:

APPEARANCE: Clear amber body. Pale khaki colour head of 7-8 minute retention.

AROMA: Wonderful. Fresh baked bread, sourdough (probably from the yeast), deep malts. Definitely evokes the "liquid bread" moniker for doppelbocks. The kind of aroma you'd expect of a beer in a style known for sustaining monks for 40 days at a time.

Does seem a bit simple for a doppelbock, though.

TASTE: Follows the aroma for the most part, though a blip of buttery character does kick in towards the back end.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, bready, filling, and unrefreshing.

OVERALL: An approachable almost-to-style doppelbock with likable characteristics. Andeschs this is not, but it's worth trying.

Yummy. I found it in a four-pack at a liquor store, poured the bottle into goblet. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights when I hold it up to the light. A blast of raisin bread smell hit me when I opened the bottle. Taste follows with malt, figs, caramel, molasses, tiny bit of hop bitterness. A creamy feel, altogether wonderful. I won't share the rest of the four-pack. Get your own.
