1535 Pearl Street Porter

A very good basic porter here from these guys, really tasty from thing to tap, creamy and rich, but not overly viscous and still quite easy drinking. The appearance is quite dark, chocolate brown with an aroma to match. Mild bitterness from the malt, and a balancing vanilla note to the finish which really works. Minimally hoppy, and less of a yeast influence than I thought it would have, rather clean as these go, but creamy and expansive because of the nitro. You don't always need cocoa nibs and bourbon barrels to make good winter dark beer, and this one is proof of that. Beautiful in its simplicity, drinkable all day.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1535 arrived in a shaker pint glass with a deep mahogany hue and a small whipped coco head. The head fell to a patchwork blanket and left good lace.

Molasses and espresso dominate. A hint of licorice is at work too. Bitterness is mild and has a black tea bite to it. All the flavors linger through the finish. The dense body is a touch too fizzy for my tastes.

Overall, a really nice Porter. It has a nice complexity and avoids the Stout-light theme of many American Porters I've had. 1535 is a very solid effort.

Not at all retired, the "1535 Pearl Street Porter" was one of my favorites from Mountain Sun, even if there was nothing necessarily distinctive about it. Poured opaque black with a tan head that left some nice lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma, dark malts, dark chocolate, some coffee, earthy; no hops to speak of. Same on the taste buds: roasty, rich, dark malts, a touch of coffee/cocoa bitterness. Smooth and easily drinkable, and on the heavier end of being medium-bodied.

I think this is the same a Pearl Street Porter, so here it goes. A dark brown near black color with a tan head. A mix of roasted dry malts and some sweet chocolate. The taste is also quite toasty and has a well balanced hop bitterness. Good crisp body with a dry finish. An excellent beer to wash down one of their burgers.

The beer pours a deep, dark black color with a frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has an earthy black malt scent with some chocolate hints. There is no trace of hops in the aroma. The taste is good as well. It has a rich, malty flavor that is full of black and chocolate malts. It is dry and quite earthy. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good porter. It's nothing special, but it drinks well. It has good flavor and aroma.

Appearance: Pearl Porter pours a dark brown with red bricking. It's opaque.
Flavor: it's definitely 'roasty' lots of that kind of flavor in this brew.
Aroma: The smell is of roasted nuts & perhaps coffee. This is a dry drinking porter and quite tasty. I'd recommend it.

Appearance: Pours a mostly opaque, dark reddish-brown with a persistant, dark tan head.

Smell: Aroma of roasted and chocolate malts, along with subtle hints of smoke and licorice.

Taste: The flavor is rich and bittersweet with lots of roasted malt character. A fair amount of chocolate malt plays second fiddle to the roasted malt. I detect some smoke and licorice as well. The bitterness is a bit laid back, which is derived from roasted malts, rather than hops. Finishes like it began, clean and full of flavor.

Mouthfeel: Fairly thick in body, with a rich mouthfeel. Finishes firm and dry. Quite clean, like all of Mountain Sun's brews.

Drinkability: This is a damn good porter that would be fantastic on cask. More please...
